How Hackers Attack Through APT Entry Points

As business communications and data sharing becomes more sophisticated, so do attacks on sensitive data. APT's(Advanced Persistent Threats) are part of the new wave of data hacking techniques. Not only are these attacks more frequent and persistent, but APTs often evade corporate security monitoring systems by coming in through email, PDF files, familiar software and other trusted communications and business tools. It is less costly to prevent APT entry points than to extricate the threat once it’s inside your system. To secure your system, you must understand how hackers attack through APT entry points.

Types of Entry Points:

Hackers use different types of entry points depending on the security system. Email is still the most common APT attack point. Email can allow a hacker access to your data when an employee opens an attachment such as a link, a PDF file or a Microsoft Word document. Once the attachment or link is active, malware is downloaded to help the hacker infiltrate your system and obtain the desired data. Also, with the increase in mobile device usage through both corporate-issued technology and BYOD/BYOC programs, instant messaging, mobile email applications, social media freeware, social networking programs and other communications apps are increasingly used as APT entry points. Slightly less known APT points include exploitation of vulnerabilities in popular software programs. The most widely used programs, such as the Microsoft Office suite and Adobe products, are the most frequently exploited programs.

Six Steps to APT Entry:

While variances are possible, there are six steps to most APT attacks (this graphic offers more information).
  1. Gathering Intelligence: It is rare to detect an APT attack during this phase. The hacker performs external research to gain information and choose attack targets. Often free, open source portals such as social networking sites are used for research.
  2. Point of Entry Execution:  The malware is delivered through email, instant messenger, file download or software exploitation. Occasionally, the hacker uses a less traditional means of delivering malware via a direct hack of the server or website.
  3. C&C (Command and Control):  The hacker follows the malware to control and direct the search for data.
  4. Enhance Control: Once inside, the hacker can compromise additional computers and devices by working from the point of entry and out laterally.
  5. Data Identification: The point of gaining entry through an APT point is to identify desired data. In step five, the hacker employs different techniques to pinpoint the data’s location.
  6. Data Harvesting: The data are identified, harvested and extracted. The hacker typically uses tools like encryption to disguise the data being transmitted to external servers that the hacker controls.

Guarding Against APT Threats:

APT threats are an advanced form of hack used to gain access to larger amounts of sensitive data. The process for guarding against APT threats is two-fold. First, identify your system’s vulnerabilities with a thorough IT risk management assessment. Examine how employees communicate, what controls or protections govern access to outside applications or web servers, whether BYOD/BYOC programs are used and how server access monitoring is done to find weak points. Be sure you have the latest versions of antivirus software and software suites installed, because the software’s updates often address known security threats.
Next, use the data collected from the risk management assessment to determine the level of threat your organization faces. Consider installing an enhanced network security product that includes specific controls to stop targeted attacks. You should choose a product that performs these four steps:
  1. Detect: The product should detect even “invisible” threats as well as common threats.
  2. Analyse: The product should instantly perform a full threat analysis to assess risk.
  3. Adapt: The product should act quickly to send alerts, in addition to blocking known and new risks.
  4. Respond: The product should deliver detailed information about each attack incident.
By understanding how hackers attack through APT entry points, it’s possible to threat-proof your infrastructure against security breaches.

Should you replace 300*250 Google Adsense Ad Unit with 300*600 Half Page Ad?

Google Adsense recently introduced 300*600 Large Rectangle(Which is often called as a Half Page Ad).Previously this ad unit was available for only Premium Adsense Publishers but now Google Adsense went ahead and made it open for all. So,now all the Adsense Publishers can use 300*600 ad unit on their blogs and websites.

Advantages of 300*600 Half Page Ad Unit:

Adsense Ads are always bigger the better.Surveys say that larger ad units perform well than smaller ad units.300*600 Ad unit made available for all because of following reasons;
  • To increase CTR(Click Through Rate).Large banner ads can generate more clicks.
  • More Clicks = More Earning.
  • Generally Larger Banner Ads lead to higher CPM(Cost Per Mile or Thousand Impressions) and CPC(Cost Per Click).

Review of 300*600 Ad Unit:

I always keep on testing the performance of Ad Units at various placement by conducting split testing.Similarly I experimented 300*600 Large Rectangle by replacing it with 300*250 Right Side Ad on my blog. The results were as follows.
After replacing 300*250 rectangle with 300*600 the results were as follows. The below screen shot shows the performance of 300*600 Half Page Ad.
300*600 Ad Unit Performance Report
The Ad Unit has generated income of $7 thorough 32,111 views with a CPC of $0.11.
Similarly you can check out the Ad Performance of 300*250 Ad Unit from below screenshot.
300*250 Ad Unit Performance
This Ad unit has generated over $12.43 through 23,891 views with a CPC of $0.25.

300*250 VS 300*600:

From the above reports its clear that 300*250 Ad Unit has out performed 300*600 Ad unit.In terms of CPC also Medium Rectangle has performed well compared to Half Page Ad.

Why 300*600 Ad Unit didn't perform well?

There are many reasons which I
analysed after testing both Ad Units.
  • 300*600 Ad units are new and many of the advertisers not yet started using these ad units.
  • Shows up only few image ads.Generally image ads cpc will be higher compared with Text Link ads.So, lesser images ads means lesser cpc generated.
  • The worst thing is that most of the time these ads remain 50% blank and sometimes even 75% blank without any ads.The text ads shows also are ads with very less cpc.Which doesn't generate much income to you.

Conclusion:

Currently I suggest you to stick with 300*250 Medium Rectangle. After few days more and more advertisers will be turning towards Half Page Ads,then you can start using 300*600 ads which can generate more income in future.Let me know your opinion in your comments below.

AllTechBuzz Monthly Income Report November 2012

Many people ask me "How much money do I make from this blog?",well now I went ahead and planned to publish my income report once in a while. Its been more than a year I started this blog. There were many ups and downs(Google Panda Penalties as well) in my blogging career.I didn't make even a single penny in my first 6 months of blogging but I didn't loose hope and continued blogging with better focus and new strategies. Finally I have got some fruitful results, though not extraordinary but still I am making decent money by blogging Part Time.Yes ,I am not a full time blogger .I am still pursuing my Graduation(B.E 3rd Year) in Mechanical Engineering.Though I am from non technical field I gained good knowledge in the fields of Web Designing,SEO ,Computers,Tech related stuff.

Here is the Income Report:

1.Google Adsense:$115

Adsense earning is improving day by day.For my blogs traffic the above figure is very less infact. The low income generated from adsense is due to bad ads placement which generated low CTR thereby low adsense income.I decided not to put much focus on income till I get decent traffic and good rank.In the past few months the blogs traffic and rank increased tremendously.Especially after moving to a new domain name. Now I am focusing both on improving traffic and income from blog as well.
Google Adsense is not my primary source of income and will not be the primary source of income as I already had few bad experience with Adsense program in the past. So,I don't want to solely depend on Adsense.I am focusing more towards other ways which can generate more income than adsense does like Affiliate Marketing and Direct Advertising.

2.Direct Advertising (Including Sponsored Reviews):$235

So this is my primary source of income.I get good number of sponsored posts but I am accepting only those which I feel can deliver good service to users and at the same time adding value to my blog content as well.

 3.Infolinks:$60

Infolinks is intext advertising network. In the initial stages of my blogging I used only infolinks. This is one of the best alternatives to adsense. If your blog has decent traffic then you can earn good money from infolinks.
Currently I reduced the number of infolinks text link units to 1 for testing purpose.I may completely avoid text link ads in near future.

4.Services(SEO,Web Designing etc):  $70

I recently started paid services on my blog.I will be helping newbie bloggers and clients who want to improve their blog ranking or social media presence etc.

5. Amazon Affiliate: $3.26

I just signed up for Amazon Affiliate few days back.Luckily I already sold one product in a week which generated $3.26 commission.Though very less,I found that there is a good potential to make money from Amazon.

6.Adf.Ly : $5.67

I don't use this advertising network on this blog but I used this url shortening service in my initial stages of blogging for my youtube videos from which I am making around $5 per month.Currently I stopped using this service because of their low payout.

Total Revenue for November 2012:

115+235+60+70+3.26+5.67=488.93.
Of which I paid around $20 for my paid authors and other staff.Which leaves $468.93 into my pocket.
I don't know whether its a decent amount or not but if we convert into indian currency then 468.93*50=Rs 23446/- which is a pretty good income for a part time blogger and student(Though the dollar exchange ratio is slightly more than 50 ,here I am considering as 50).
So that's the income figure which I generate from this blog.Though not really impressive but its a good encouragement for me and as well as newbie bloggers especially students who work part time.

Future Goals:

  • Improve traffic will be the first priority always.
  • I will give high priority to affiliate marketing ,Direct Advertising.
  • I will be trying few CPM Ad Networks.
  • I am looking forward to hire some content writers with excellent writing skills and good knowledge on Tech aspects. If you want to be a paid author on this blog then contact me.
If you have any suggestions or anything to say let us know in your comments.

How to Install Windows 8 from USB Drive

Windows 8 has made a grand and promising entry in the market as increasing number of users are going to benefit with this operating system. The highly sophisticated way of installing the operating system is by taking the assistance of bootable USB drive.
Motherboards these days support boot options and hence, it is necessary to arm our esteemed users the correct method to make one. Although, market is flooded with free softwares which people can use to make these drives, but hardly any one is able to function properly. Hence, it necessitates to tell you an effective, hassle free and effective method so that USB is easily created.

There are many ways to make a bootable USB/Pendrive.Here we will be discussing an easy way and also the old traditional way which is a little complicated method to create a Bootable Pendrive. After making a bootable drive then the process to install windows 8 is very simple.

1.Installing Windows 8 Using WinToBootic:

WinToBootic indeed works amazingly well as it creates pen drive bootable by which windows 8 can be installed without any sort of problems or worries.

Following are the ways to install it:

  • It is important to download WinToBootic and get the program installed
  • Now, as you run the program, there will be a window which will pop similar to what has been show in the figure below

This is the time when the software is going to detect the thumb drive. If in case it does not, then you need to go to drop down and select your source by clicking on arrow . One thing you need to make sure is that your thumb drive is formatted in NTFS format. It can be easily done at the start of computer (START+E). Thereby, click right on thumb drive. After all, you need to click on format and choose NTFS mode and finally by clicking on “OK” you will format the drive very easily and convincingly as well.
As you drag iso file onto it, it  will look similar to the figure below

Now, the moment you click “Do it”, there will be a pop up which is shown below. You have to be quite sure that your drive is correct and that every thing is in order as well.
Now, after you click “OK”, the process will start and the software is going to copy Windows 8 to the pen drive.
There are more installing pictures in order to help you understand in a clear and concise way as well.

Hence, you will be able to install windows 8 from the bootable usb drive.

Traditional old Method to create a bootable USB Drive:

You need the following things
4 GB+ USB flash drive
Windows 8 ISO file or DVD
A PC with Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 OS
  1. Now, as all the items are available, you need to access your drive and ensure backup of those files which were previously on the drive
  2. Secondly, you need to Navigate to Start> All Programs> Accessories, thereby click on Command Prompt and finally select Run as administrator. Click on “Yes” if you receive UAC prompt.
  1. This specific task can be accomplished as you type “cmd” in the start menu search box along with pressing Ctrl+ Shift + Enter
  2. As soon as the command prompt is up and running in the following way, press enter
Windows 8 DISKPART

  1. The next step is to type in LIST DISK and for checking disk number for your connected USB, you need to hit Enter. In order to help you understand a bit more clearly, I have used my USB drive as “1”. You can crosscheck for the correct drive against their sizes”

You need to make utmost sure that DISKPART in any case has detected USB flash drive. However, if it has not been detected or you are facing any sort of problem, then the best thing you can do is to reconnect your USB by following the aforesaid steps once again.
Space
Following are the list of commands which you have to run and hit “Enter” after each of them so that it can easily be able to run:
SELECT DISK 1 (your USB disk number might vary)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS
(The time varies as it depends on the size of the drive)
 ASSIGN
EXIT

Now, you need to proceed towards the next step. You do not have to close the command prompt window.
  1. In order to access the windows 8 ISO file, you have to mount it to virtual drive
As soon as the ISO is mounted, you need to take note of the drive letter for the virtual drive

If in case you have a bootable windows 8 disk, then insert it in cd tray and write down the letter for the drive it leads onto

7. Now, type in the following after re opening the command prompt window
G: CD BOOT and click on enter. (“G” stands out for your DVD drive letter or mounted virtual drive letter)
CD BOOT and click enter.

8. It is almost completed. Now simply type in BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 J: (“J” stands for you USB flash drive letter and it is easily found in explorer) and now simply hit Enter Key

9. Now the time has come for you to open Windows 8 cd and you have to copy the content to root folder of your boot USB

It is to be noted that in order to boot from a USB, you have to make this option active by going to BIOS settings which is there on the target system.

There is also the second method which will ease you even further.

  • Firstly get the backup of your data to a removable media
  • As it is done, next step for you is to download and run it as administrator.
  • It is the time for you to choose the flash drive which you are looking to make bootable. All you have to do is to select your file system FAT32 or NTFS,  do not forget to “check format box” and also take a note of the “create a bootable disk using Ms-dos”. Finally, you need to also check “create extend label and icon files”.
  • Now, you have to click on DBD drive logo which is next to option of “create a bootable disk using” and browse 8 ISO file.
  • Finally, as you click on start button, you will get to see a warning window, click ok and windows will automatically start the transfer of ISO files to USB
All you need to do is to configure your Boot options in your BIOS settings and the set up is going to start as you select the Boot first priority to USB HDD.
Finally, these stand out to be the easy and simply methods of installing windows 8 from pen drive. Hopefully, you will not have any sort of problems while installing it. You need to read it again, if in case you happen to find any sort of problems. Finally, you get the fruits of your patience and hard work and your bootable USB is created. Great isn’t it?
